Bergen Belsen was liberated on April 15 th 1945 by British troops. They found thirteen thousand dead and unburied bodies and sixty thousand prisoners starving and mortally ill.
Susan was a 16-year-old prisoner at Bergen-Belsen when the British arrived. She describes how the soldiers found her; nearly dead, with pulmonary tuberculosis, typhoid and famine oedema and severe malnutrition. It was a miracle she survived. She remembers being lifted out of her bed and placed in an ambulance by a battle- worn soldier whose humanity shone through in those moments of kindness.
