F004 – Deportation and cattle trucks

[Narration, archive and Survivor testimony]

The Nazis wanted to cleanse the countries they occupied of their Jewish populations. In an operation involving thousands of people, Jews were transported hundreds of miles, often in trains normally used for cattle and freight. They were told they were being ‘resettled’ in the East.

Steven was 8-years-old when he was deported in a cattle truck from Westerbork concentration camp in the Netherlands to Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. He describes the conditions on the cattle truck: 39 hours in a cattle truck. No sleep. No water. No food. The terrible smells of vomit and excrement. And the rush of cold fresh air when the doors were finally opened.
