F005 – A hidden child’s experiences

[Narrator, archive, Survivor testimony]

The Nazis issued a wartime decree which made helping Jews punishable by imprisonment in concentration camps or even execution, but some courageous people still helped Jews to hide.

Janine was 9-years-old when she was hidden by a young Polish Catholic caretaker along with thirteen others in a hole under the floor where he worked. There were six planks and chairs and a bulb hanging from the ceiling and the bucket. Everyone had to take it in turns, either to lie on the plank or sit on the chair. There was no room for walking, very little food. Janine remembers eating slices of dry bread with chopped up raw onions and she thought it was delicious. She stayed in that hole for a year.
