Between 1933 and 1939, some 300,000 Jewish people left Germany but it was difficult to get visas to other countries and the Nazis made it extremely expensive to leave. Many Jewish people in German thought their troubles in Germany would pass. Bob reflects that his father fought for Germany during WW1 and was highly decorated. He could never imagine the country that his family had lived in for over three hundred years would turn against him.
