On the night of November 9th 1938, after an inflammatory speech by Goebbels, the SS and members of the Hitler youth attacked Jewish homes and businesses. Hundreds of synagogues were burned to the ground. Jewish people were threatened, beaten up and at least ninety were murdered. This pogrom became known as Kristallnacht, Night of Broken Glass, because of the shards of glass that littered the streets the next day.
10-year-old Alfons describes watching the Hitler Youth and SS destroy the stained-glass windows and holy scrolls of a synagogue.
Survivor Ann was aged 10-years-old when she walked around the streets of Berlin the day after Kristallnacht. Her father insisted they keep moving because it was safer. The Gestapo rounded up 30,000 Jewish men and sent them to concentration camps.
