Steven was 8-years-old when he was a prisoner in Westerbork Transit Camp. The camp was grossly overcrowded and diseases like dysentery, scarlet fever, polio, jaundice were rife. The 70-seater communal toilet was simply wooden planks with holes in, built over a pit dug into the ground. Men and women had to share. There was no toilet paper. Many fell ill is as a result of the unsanitary conditions.
Steven also describes what it was like in the barracks where he slept. Sleeping was difficult because there were 660 people crammed into the space. Bunks were three-high, closely packed together. People would climb over each other and he was often woken up. It was noisy as people groaned, snored and often screamed from nightmares so it was hard to get back to sleep.
