Sometimes, journeys in cattle trucks lasted for weeks and many people died. The trains delivered their human cargo to concentration camps. Mala, then aged 12-years-old, was sent from Poland to Ravensbruck concentration camp in Germany.
She describes how, on her arrival, all the women and girls were forced to undress, their heads were shaved, they had to take cold communal showers and they were given striped jackets and skirts. Everyone looked the same. She felt as if they had all been stripped of their personalities. It was as if their very souls had been taken.
