Josef Mengele was an SS officer and doctor. In Auschwitz-Birkenau, he became known as the “Angel of Death”. Susan describes how he looked in his elegant uniform as she, aged 14-years-old at the time, and the other girls, were all forced to march in front of him, stark naked. He then decided who was going to live to work as slave labourers and who was going to die. Susan wanted to survive, so she held herself straight, pinched her cheeks and marched in front of him.
