H006 – Arrival and Selection at Auschwitz-Birkenau

[Narrator, archive and Survivor Testimony]

There were 800,000 Jewish people still living in Hungary in 1944, the largest remaining Jewish community in Europe. After the Nazis invaded, Eichmann oversaw the rounding up and deportation of the Jewish population. For most, the destination was Auschwitz-Birkenau Extermination Camp. In just six weeks, 565,000 of them would be dead.

Victims were selected upon their arrival the death camp. Men and women were divided and a Nazi officer separated those who were fit for work from the sick, the old and the young; who was going to live, who would die immediately.

Susan was 14-years-old when she arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau by cattle truck. She describes the selection process as people were put into separate lines. She was told by a fellow-inmate to say she was 15-years-old, which she did. She was then separated from her mother and put into a group of similar-aged girls who were deemed suitable for slave labour. Her mother, though, was taken away and, Susan learned later, immediately gassed.
